Phytochemical Profile and Antioxidant Potential of a Formulated Herbal Product from Sorghum bicolor Linn., Curcuma longa Linn., Bridelia ferruginea Benth and Honey

The use of plants in the treatment human diseases is as old itself. Over years, phytomedicine has gained more attention both developed and developing countries. This study evaluates phytochemicals antioxidant properties a formulated herbal product (FHP) made from leaf sheath Sorghum bicolor, rhizome Curcuma longa, stem bark Bridelia ferruginea honey. ethanolic aqueous extracts different components mixture were evaluated. chemical compositions determined via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HP-LC) at same time, investigated using ferric reducing power (FRAP). results phytochemical screening FHP used for its preparation showed presence alkaloids, phenols, saponins, tannins flavonoids irrespective extractant used. However, values higher than most phytochemicals. For instance, alkaloids (9.57±0.01 mg/g) saponins (7.35±0.01 observed extract while phenol (0.98±0.01 mg/g), (0.68±0.00 (40.54±0.05mg/g) longa. Concerning potential, highest FRAP was B. (1956.05±15.54mgAAE/g). closely followed by value S. bicolor (1359.89±27.20mgAAE/g). A total 8 compounds identified performance chromatography. These include Gallic acid, Catechin, Ferrulic Rutin, Quercetin, P-coumaric Kaempferol Apigenin. Most these chemicals are known to possess health beneficial therapeutic effects. It conceivable therefore that might exert significant effects when treat specific debilitating medical conditions.
